The human immune system maintains the homeostasis of the
internal environment by detecting and destroying invading
microbes and mutating cancer cells for the prevention of
infectious diseases and cancer. If the immune system
attacks self tissue in stead of non-self foreign bodies or
is lazy in its duty because of congenital or acquired
defects, autoimmune diseases or infectious diseases and
malignancy respectively can be caused in the body.
Regulation of the immune response is very important for the
proper function of the immune system. I have studied
suppressor or regulatory T cells since 1976 and published
about 150 international papers about immune regulation. My
major interest is to know the immunoregulatory function of
nitric oxide (NO) and carbon monoxide (CO).
